Nature

Nature..........

Some three hundred years ago, Bhutan was known as the land of the medicinal herbs. While many saints from our southern neighbor India came to meditate in the tranquil settings of the secluded Bhutanese Himalayas, for our northern neighbor, Tibet, Bhutan was the abode of medicinal plants.

In Bhutan, a proper study and record of the country's rich natural heritage is yet to be carried out. Each year, scientists are discovering new species of plants, fauna and avi fauna in Bhutan. Available data show that there are 160 species of mammals, 770 species of birds and 5,400 species of vascular plants in Bhutan, all in a country the size of Switzerland. A majority of Bhutanese are Mahayana Buddhists and with their deeply ingrained respect for all living beings, the people of Bhutan continue to live in harmony with nature. Today an estimated 72% of the total land of Bhutan is under forest cover. The laws of Bhutan decree that parliament and government shall ensure that a minimum of 60% forest cover will be maintained for all time to come.

For the visitor, this means a journey into a land that borders on the magical and the mystical. When in Bhutan, you will be pressed to see any denuded areas during your travel. Instead you will be swayed by the dominant hold of mother nature from the moment you enter Bhutanese airspace. You will see that the ground beneath is a swathe of greenery. Once you touch Bhutanese soil, you will be enveloped by lush vibrant hills.

While traveling and trekking, you will get to see the richness of Bhutan's nature at close quarters. From gushing streams that are untainted by pollution to the twittering of the birds and the calls of wild animals, modern Bhutan is indeed a nature lover's paradise.

In Bhutan, the air is clear and clean, the water pure and safe, the forest green, the mountains solid and undisturbed, the valleys picturesque and peaceful. No wonder the saying goes, you cannot take a bad photo in Bhutan.
